As I know, Magento 2 comes with a lot of improvements in areas of coding, functionality, and user experience. It is faster, the average loading time is now below two seconds (50% faster than Magento 1).
Also, Magento 2 has introduced many enhancements in search engine optimization. Checkout functionality has also been simplified and now it’s easy for customers to navigate. Magento 2 automatically recognizes inputted card types of registered customers. And so on…
In general, it depends on your current site and its current condition – bottom line is, if your site is performing well.
But If you have a well-functioning ecommerce store running on one of the latest versions of Magento 1 generating a regular income, you should make plans for upgrading to Magento 2 in one or two years.
Either way, you’re going to require a lot of development, so, if your budget allows it, upgrading to Magento 2 is a must in the long run – Magento 2 versions are going to be the prominent ones for the upcoming 7-8 years.

I completely agree with you that this question is really hot and controversy. Magento 1 based e-commerce business owners, including many of our clients, already know that Magento migration is a complicated process that requires additional expenses and time. That’s why many of them still have doubts of migration.
Magento 2 offers several considerable changes in functionality and overall performance improvements, meant to scale every business regardless of its size and industry. Here are some basic enhancements awaiting you after the Magento 2 migration process is complete:
#1 Improved performance and scalability
#2 Improved checkout process
#3 Better device responsiveness
#4 Advanced reporting
And a lot of other improvements.
