My personal favorite comes courtesy of Mrs. Jordan, my 12th grade English teacher, describing Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five:
It’s about Billy Pilgrim, a WWII soldier who becomes unstuck in time and is kidnapped by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore who force him to mate in a zoo with the porn queen of earth.
You bet your ass I picked up that book as fast as I could and devoured it (I was 17). It’s still one of my favorites, and Vonnegut has become one of my favorite authors.
What’s the best description of a book you’ve ever heard?
She also read us Cat’s Cradle, which was really heavy for a bunch of high school kids. I’ve since learned that every chapter is meant to be a joke – it’s some of the best satire I’ve ever read.
